- 1892-1962. US physicist known for his work on
- X-rays. Working at Chicago 1923 he found that
- X-rays scattered by such light elements as
- carbon increased their wavelengths. Compton
- concluded from this unexpected result that
- the X-rays were displaying both wave-like and
- particle-like properties, since named the
- Compton effect. He shared the 1927 Nobel
- prize with Charles Wilson.
