  1. 1892-1962. US physicist known for his work on
  2. X-rays. Working at Chicago 1923 he found that
  3. X-rays scattered by such light elements as
  4. carbon increased their wavelengths. Compton
  5. concluded from this unexpected result that
  6. the X-rays were displaying both wave-like and
  7. particle-like properties, since named the
  8. Compton effect. He shared the 1927 Nobel
  9. prize with Charles Wilson.
